About McCalls

McCalls Limited was established in 1887 in Upperkirkgate, Aberdeen selling second hand goods, mainly clothing, by its founders Daniel McCall, an international auctioneer and his wife Annie McCall, a market trader who sold from a stall in the Castlegate area of Aberdeen.

The demand for second-hand clothing diminished with the influx of imported clothing and the rise of the high street stores. The increase in patriotic fervour and the desire to have a sense of belonging and affiliation made a good case for supplying Highlandwear. McCalls saw an opening to offer their expertise in all Highlandwear products whilst making their availability affordable through Hire. The acceptance was an unqualified success.

In 1985 McCalls moved to larger premises (5 floors in total) in Bridge Street offering dedicated floors to Scottish Highland Dress, Formal Hire, Scottish Giftware and Antique Jewellery. Our Highlandwear and Hire departments offer one of the largest ranges of Highland Dress options in Scotland from traditional Jacobites and Philamores to the new Velvet Frock Coats and tartan Trews. McCalls services includes a made to measure tailoring service in Kilts, Jackets and Trews with over 2000 different tartans available. McCalls also have one of the largest selections of Sporrans, Sgian Dubhs and other accessories in Scotland. Over the last 10 years McCalls Limited have expanded to become one of the largest retailers and Kilt makers in Scotland. With outlets in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Elgin, Dundee Glasgow and Tillicoultry with an infrastructure which supports over 250 wholesale operations worldwide, McCalls is able to cater for any size of event or function.

We have also had the pleasure of dressing many of the rich and famous including pop and film stars.

McCalls owes it’s success to the application of a simple philosophy of “Good Value for Money & Top Quality Service”

McCalls of Elgin

McCalls of Elgin has traded from these premises since 1989, however the building dates back as early as 1890. The city of Elgin, which is a Royal Burgh, is situated midway between Aberdeen and Inverness on the A96. It received the title of Royal Burgh from David I during his reign in the 12th century. Dominating the town is the huge ruin of the cathedral, known as “The Lantern of the North”. This cathedral was originally built in 1224, but has since suffered the attentions of several fires, including that set by the raiding party of Alexander Stewart (known as the Wolf of Badenoch) in 1390,which sustained such damage that it was necessary to rebuild the western gable, the arcades of the nave, the central tower and the Chapter House. However, after the Reformation in 1560 the Cathedral was abandoned and fell into disrepair.

Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at the Thunderton House, a local hotel, on his way to fight at Culloden Moor 36 miles away. Elgin is also situated close to the world’s only malt whisky trail and the Cairngorms.

McCalls has recently refurbished both inside and outside of the store, to allow us to offer a larger selection of Highland Dress and formal wear for hire and sale. We offer a large selection of tartans for Hire including the Pride of Scotland tartan collection, which is very popular for weddings and evening functions.

McCalls services include a made to measure tailoring service in Kilts, Jackets and Trews with over 3,000 different tartans available and a range of cloths including silks, cashmeres, wool’s and velvets.

We also offer a large selection of Highland accessories, Scottish gifts and jewellery. Our staff are warm, friendly and highly experienced and will be happy to help you with any request or enquiry.
