The MacDonald tartan is a timeless favourite, which provides a broad variety of looks. These variations include, MacDonald Clan: a green and blue base, with a vivid and distinctive red and black overcheck; MacDonald Dress: a predominantly white base, accented with green, blue, red, black and white stripes; and MacDonald Hunting: a green and blue base, with a wider red, black and white overstripe. It is woven in numerous Modern, Ancient, and Weathered variations, as well as branch-specific patterns, which differ in their colour tones and contrast. The tartan represents Clan Donald, one of the largest and most powerful Highland clans; founded by Donald, grandson of Somerled of the Isles, who was historically associated with the title of Lord of the Isles.
