Over 135 years of heritage & expertise
Founded by Daniel McCall, an international auctioneer and his wife Annie McCall, a market trader who sold from a stall in the Castlegate area of Aberdeen.
McCalls Limited was established in 1887 in Upperkirkgate, Aberdeen, initially selling second hand goods, mainly clothing.
Unfortunately with the influx of imported clothing and the rise of the high street stores the demand for second-hand clothing diminished, however…
An increase in patriotic fervour and the desire to have a sense of belonging and affiliation made a good case for supplying Highlandwear.
The McCalls saw an opening to offer their expertise in all Highlandwear products whilst making their availability affordable through Hire, the acceptance was an unqualified success.
In 1985 McCalls moved to larger premises (5 floors in total) in Bridge Street offering dedicated floors to Scottish Highland Dress, Formal Hire, Scottish Giftware and Antique Jewellery.
Our Highlandwear and Hire departments offer one of the largest ranges of Highland Dress options in Scotland from traditional Jacobites and Philamores to the new Velvet Frock Coats and tartan Trews.
McCalls services include a made-to-measure tailoring service in Kilts, Jackets and Trews with over 2000 different tartans available. McCalls also have one of the largest selections of Sporrans, Sgian Dubhs and other accessories in Scotland.
Over the last 20 years McCalls Limited has expanded to become the largest retailer and Kiltmakers in Scotland, McCalls owes its success to the application of a simple philosophy of “Good Value for Money & Top Quality Service.” With outlets in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Elgin, Dundee, Broughty Ferry, Glasgow and Tillicoultry with an infrastructure which supports over 250 wholesale operations worldwide, McCalls can cater for any size of event or function.
McCalls’ traditional kiltmaking factory, Daiglen of Scotland, nestles at the foot of the Ochill Hills in the quiet village of Tillicoultry, Stirlingshire. The two-storey building was originally built in 1846 and was the dwelling house of a Mr Archibald of Archibald Mills, who was the owner of what was then called Tillicoultry Woollen Mill.
McCalls purchased Daiglen of Scotland in December 1994 from the previous owner who had developed the site as a centre of excellence for the time-honored method of kilt making. Our hand-made kilt workshop, the largest in the world has a depth of experience and expertise passed down from generation to generation.
Here we produce our iconic national dress; tailor-made for each individual client, using age-old methods.
Each authentic kilt produced by McCalls requires thousands of hand-sewn stitches and up to ten hours of highly-skilled work.
Led by supervisor Isabel McMillan, all 7 members of the team possess vital experience in various stages of the intricate process of creating a made to measure kilt.
This dedication to perfecting the craft of kiltmaking is a reflection of centuries of Caledonian tradition – and their determination to continue to preserve our heritage.
McCalls of Daiglen services the needs of its customers from the four corners of the world. With a heritage and our reputation to protect, McCalls of Daiglen will ensure our clients complete satisfaction.
