Kilts can be confusing at first, but this guide will help with how to wear them correctly!
Firstly, the kilt must be wrapped around your body, with the pleats to the back. The kilt should sit around your waist and the aprons should overlap in the front; the kilt should drop to knee height.
Now, when it comes to shirts, there are a few options. Here at McCall’s we offer Dress Shirts and Ghillie Shirts. All shirts should be tucked into the kilt for a neat look.
Dress shirts are the more formal option of the two. This look would normally be styled with a bow tie or tie. McCall’s offer multiple colours of dress shirts to compliment any tartan outfit!
Ghillie Shirts are a loose-fitting shirt, with leather lace up rather than standard buttons. This lace can be tied easily in a knot or left undone, this all just depends on wearers preference. The shirt also has 2 wrist buttons to adjust cuff size as well as loose sleeves and side slits. As it is a very loose garment, we recommend going down 1 size from your standard t-shirt size.
The right jacket & waistcoat is essential for any Highland wear outfit, we offer many different choices. From the Prince Charlie to the Argyll jacket, whichever you choose, the jacket colour should flatter the colours in your chosen kilt. When wearing your jacket, the item is normally left open and unbuttoned to see the waistcoat.

Flashes: Worn over the hose at the top of the calf to stop the sock from falling down. The material of the flash should be hidden by the top of the sock with just the tartan flash showing. This tartan can match your kilt or be a solid colour to compliment the look.
